Tips and Tricks for Improvement

 TIPS FOR BETTER SPEECH EVALUATIONS
  Here are some how-tos

 Help speakers gain self-improvement by:

  •        Being genuine (speak from your heart)
  •        Recognizing their strengths
  •        Creating a climate for motivating change
  •        Recognizing and giving areas for improvement (positive change)
  •        Suiting the evaluation to the level of that individual speaker

REMEMBER: Rule #1: Judge the speech, not the person (avoid value judgments)

Judging the delivery:

  • Earnestness
  •  Appropriateness
  •  Organization
  • Conviction/passion
  • Sincerity
  • Body language
  • Voice delivery/inflection
  • Eye contact
  •  Grammar/colorful word pictures/phrases

Pitfalls to avoid:

  •  Avoid reading word-for-word from the manual for the evaluation
  •  Avoid whitewashing (making it all sound too good)
  •  Avoid lethal surgery (this is nurturing, remember)
  •   Talking, talking, talking (stick to the agenda)
  •   Providing nothing for the speaker to improve/build upon
